Course Description:
This course focuses on the ways career development contributes to a satisfying and healthy life, as well as the development of a career plan. Emphasis is on interest and personality testing, values clarification, career information, research skills, individual skills assessment, decision making, and goal setting. Course also covers changing job trends and requirements, as well as factors related to the procurement and retention of employment.
(3 units, UC & CSU transferable, CSU GE Area E)

Student Learning Outcomes
As a result of completing this course students will:
- Develop a career plan
- Evaluate potential effects of career choices on physiological, social and psychological well-being.
- Conduct research on potential majors and careers.
- Explain the steps involved in a decision making process.
- Implement appropriate resume writing and interview techniques.
Materials Required
Textbook: The Career Fitness Program, 11th Edition by Sukiennik, Bendat & Raufman
- A reserve copy will be available in the library on the Santa Rosa and Petaluma campuses. Please see me for details on call #’s.
- Career Planning Tests: MBTI, and STRONG Interest Inventory.
PLEASE WAIT ON THESE AS THE COST MIGHT BE CHANGING I WILL GIVE DIRECTIONS IN A COUPLE WEEKS NOTE: Students must purchase two assessments: MBTI (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator) and Strong Interest Inventory/MBTI Career Report (Combined); total of $41. You must call the Accounting Department at the Santa Rosa Campus at 707-527-4973 to make your payment over the phone by credit card, and let them know you are calling to pay for materials in Amanda Greene’s class. Be sure to ask for a receipt to be emailed to you and upload in to Canvas in the Career Tests assignment. Your results will be emailed to you at the appropriate time.
Expectations
- Attendance is extremely important. Because this is an online class, your attendance will be measured based upon your participation in the discussions and the timely submission of your assignments. You are required to log into Canvas at minimum once per week. If you do not log in weekly, you will lose points and can possibly be dropped from the course.
- It is the student’s responsibility to drop a class officially through your cubby; otherwise a failing grade will be assigned. Make sure to check the Calendar to verify important dates and deadlines for the semester: Link to Academic Calendar
- Students are expected to behave in a mature and appropriate manner when participating in an online forum. The Instructor reserves the right to censor any material that violates the college's Student Conduct Code and consequences will result in loss of points and possibly removal from the course. All students are expected to know the Student Conduct Code and adhere to it in this class:

Homework
Complete and submit all assignments on the scheduled due dates through Canvas. Any late work is due within one week of the assigned due date in order to receive partial credit. Points will be deducted for late assignments. Directions for completing assignments will be given throughout the semester.

Chapter Exercises: 15 @ 5 pts each = 75
Quizzes: 7 @ 10 pts each = 70
Various Weekly Assignments = 500 pts
Final Portfolio: Final Paper & Resume/Cover Letter = 175 points

Online Course/Technical Expectations:
Technical Expertise:
This is course is conducted 100% online. As a result, you will be required to:
- Navigate the Canvas course environment
- Use the Internet
- Participate in online discussion forums
- Utilize basic word processing, such as MS Word or Google Docs (free)
If you are not comfortable or do not have much experience in the online environment, consider taking CSKLS 334 (Taking an Online Class, .5 unit) before taking any online class. However, this is not required for this course and detailed instructions on how to proceed with this course are provided at the beginning in the section titled "Introduction."
Online Mode of Instruction:
Although this course is conducted 100% online, it is NOT a self-study course. Even though it does not matter at which time of day you complete your work and participate in the forums, there will be deadlines that you must meet each week. It will also not be possible to complete the course early because there will be discussion forums that require you to interact with your classmates.

Assignment Guidelines
- Discussion Posts: This is part of your participation in the class and is a vital component of your grade. Due to the nature of being enrolled in an online course, you will be required to participate in discussion forums where you will post answers and respond to your peers. It is expected that responses will be respectful of each other. You must post on the assigned topic, and respond to a minimum of two of your classmates. To receive full credit for a discussion post, your post must be 2 paragraphs minimum and each of your 2 responses must be 1 paragraph minimum.
- Chapter Exercises: There are various chapter exercise assignments listed on your syllabus. Each additional exercise you complete can be submitted for up to 5 points extra credit. When completing all chapter exercises be sure to use the following heading on the upper left or right corner of your paper:

- Assignments: All assignments are due no later than 11:55 p.m. PST on the date listed. Typed assignments need to be completed with a 12 point font, one inch margins, and double spaced. Directions for completing assignments will be given throughout the semester and listed in your Canvas course. Please save your documents as Microsoft Word or PDF attachments. For MAC users, save as PDF not PAGES files. You can do this for free through Google docs.
- EXTRA CREDIT: Examples of extra credit include: Additional chapter exercises which were not assigned, additional informational interviews, Pinterest board assignment and career related website/book research reports. A maximum of 20 points will be allotted for the semester and is due to the Instructor by the stated deadlines.
- Important Dates & Deadlines: Students must observe the class deadlines found on their Schedule in their cubby. Students who fail to drop classes by the posted deadlines are responsible for all fees and could receive substandard grades.
