Unit 1: Overview
Overview of Unit 1
Unit 1 will be five weeks long. Over the next five weeks, we will discuss the tools needed to study the topics of sex and gender in the United States. This unit will focus on defining terms, examining history, and exploring theories about sex and gender. These tools will be the building blocks for the rest of the course. Below you can find the breakdown of the next five weeks (this information is also in your syllabus):
Weeks 2-6
- Week 2: Power, Privilege, & Intersectionality
- Week 3: Bodies & Genders
- Week 4: Gender Identity
- Week 5: Sexual Orientation
- Week 6: Gender Theory
After this unit, you will have the necessary vocabulary and an understanding of the theoretical approaches that will aid you in your study of sex and gender. Using these tools, you can then start to examine your own beliefs, attitudes, and values around sex and gender and compare them to the dominant U.S cultural views of these same topics.
