Mold Release
A mold release is a thin coating applied to a mold that prevents the casting from sticking to the mold. This allows the piece to be removed with ease, prevents damage to both the mold and the object, and extends the life of the mold. It is important to always make sure the mold release is compatible with the chosen casting material. If the mold release is incompatible, the piece may not cure properly or the surface appearance may be altered.
Some mold releases can be used to change the appearance of objects in desirable ways. Mica powders may be used to add a shimmer to the surface of an object. Other powders imitate the surface finish of natural materials such as iron, bronze, steel, marble, wood, porcelain, and more.
