Full Scale Sloper is due in class on October 1st

During Modules 5 and 6, each of you should begin to create your full scale sloper set. This set should include the following pieces:

Bodice Front
Bodice Back
Skirt Front
Skirt Back
Sleeve (optional)

Sourcing the Pattern Set:

There are several options for where you can get the patterns for your sloper set. You can consider purchasing a pattern, drafting a pattern from a set of body measurements, OR if you already have a sloper from another class you can use that one.

Option 1: Purchase a Pattern

Physical Patterns

Another option is to purchase a commercial pattern that is designed as a "fitting shell".

Option 2: Draft a Pattern

PATTERN DRAFTING is the process of taking a set of body measurements and creating the pattern shapes based on a detailed set of instructions which will guide you to draw in the correct shapes for each area of the pattern.

In the book Patternmaking for Fashion Design by Helen Joseph Armstrong, there are detailed pattern drafting instructions to guide you to make a full size sloper set. You can use your own body measurements, the measurements of your dress form, OR you can use standard measurements that are used for sizing in the industry.

Option 3: Use an Existing Sloper Set

If you already have a full scale sloper set, you can consider using that one for this class. It might need some changes to the shape depending on what dart structure it has in the bodice and skirt. You should consult with your instructor about using any existing sloper set.

Truing the Pattern:

However you decide to create your full scale sloper, you will want to go through the same rigorous truing process which we completed for the half scale sloper. It is essential that your sloper set be as accurate as possible so that your pattern drafts will also be accurate, and so your garment designs will be successful.

Transfer the Sloper to Tag Paper:

After you are sure the sloper is correct and all darts and notches are marked accurately, you should transfer your sloper set onto tag paper (or other heavy weight paper). Be sure to include all the important pattern markings that you have included on your half scale pattern set. Once you have cut out the tag paper sloper, you should do a final check of all parts of the pattern before you begin drafting with it.
