The purpose of this learning activity is for you to explore various symbols representing hate groups and resources that can help law enforcement identify their meaning.
Instructions
One of the indicators of an organized hate groups presence in a community is graffiti that includes hate symbols and phrases. There are thousands of symbols, graphics, and phrases that could have an innocent meaning, but that could also be used by hate crimes to make themselves visible.
The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) maintains a database of hate symbols that law enforcement can use to identify a connection with an organized hate group. For this activity, use the ADL website to identify the hate symbol. Provide a short explanation of the symbols meaning in your own words and identify the hate group it is affiliated with.
