Overview

Now that you have read "The Power of Creativity" on pages 25-26 in Pathways, you will write/type your first vocabulary notebook for this course. Using new vocabulary is key to understanding new words and remembering them. If you just memorize words and definitions, you will remember them for a while, but you have to use the new words in a logical sentence to file them successfully in your memory. 

Objectives

One of the objectives (goals) in this course is to:

•  Integrate academic vocabulary into paragraphs and essays

The objectives of writing the vocabulary notebook are to:

• Identify unfamiliar words in the reading passage
• Find the correct definitions for the new words in the context of the reading
• Define the words and use them in your own sentences

Directions

For Google Drive: Vocabulary Notebook: Google Doc Links to an external site.

1. Click on the link and make a copy. 
2. Add your name to the top right. 
3. Save the Google Doc to your Google Drive class folder. 

For Microsoft Word Users: Vocabulary Notebook.docx file Links to an external site.

1. Click on the link and save the file to your computer. 

In the appropriate spaces you will type:

•  the vocabulary word
•  the part of speech: noun, verb, adjective, adverb, preposition . . .
•  a sentence from the textbook (see my example for "quotation marks" and page number. )
•  your guess at the meaning of the word
•  the word's definition from the dictionary,
•  your own sentence, using the word in the correct context
• See my example at the top of the page to guide you as you work

4. When you are finished entering all the information in number 3, you will:

For Google Docs:

• Save the Google Doc to your Google Drive class folder.
• Share the Google Doc with me by making me an editor and copying the link.
• Choose the Website URL tab on the Canvas Assignment and copy the link into the box.
• Or, use the Google Drive LTI tab; find your Google Doc in Google Drive and click on the file to upload it to the assignment.
