When looking at two species that interact, we often ask ourselves the questions
- Does one species receive benefits and the other is harmed?
- Do both species benefit?
- Are both species harmed?
That can be summed up in this table: (harmed is symbolized with (-) and benefits with (+)
Interaction | Definition | Species A | Species B |
Predation | Species A kills and eats Species B | (+) | (-) |
Competition | Both species ''fight'' over a resource- even if one ''wins'' it still lost energy and resources in the battle | (-) | (-) |
Herbivory | Species A eats part of Species B ( a plant) | (+) | (-) |
Parasitism | Species A eats parts of Species B but doesn't kill it. | (+) | (-) |
Mutualism | Close interaction where both species benefit | (+) | (-) |
Commensalism | Species A benefits but there is no effect on Species B | (+) | 0 |
This video will go over these interactions in more detail. I will be embedding questions and more information in the video for you to learn more about each type of interaction.
