What Is The Study Guide?
The study guide is a summary of the material that will be covered in each week's module. It includes the content that a student should have learned as well as Study Guide Questions to help you practice active learning with the material.
This type of active learning is so important for me, that I write my lecture exams using these exact questions. For each exam, I will select some of the study guide questions and put them on the exam exactly as written in Canvas. I will then convert the rest into multiple choice questions.
How Should I Use The Study Guide?
It's a good idea to block out time each week on your study calendar to write out responses to the study guide questions. This is a great way to prepare for lecture exams! It helps you see which material you're already strong on, as well as what you still need to work with. And it can really help you formulate questions to ask me during student office hours.
There are enough questions that it will take time to work through them all. Do not wait until right before an exam to get started!
We aren't great at assessing our own learning/mastery of a subject. It is important to get feedback about your answers. The best way to do this is
- Work on them with me in office hours
- Work on them with Judy Hogan our PALS in her weekly sessions
- Work on them with a study group.
- Try to answer them before class and then after lecture, go back and add information from lecture.
Assignment
You will need two color pens/pencils
- Pick one study guide question and write out an answer BEFORE coming to lecture
- In a different color pen or pencil, make notes and corrections AFTER lecture
- Take a photo and submit to Canvas.
