I'm guessing that most of you have never attended office hours before. There are many reasons that students don't attend office hours: shyness, intimidation, lack of time/scheduling difficulties and the most common question ''I don't know what to say!'' Butresearch shows a strong correlation between student success and getting support outside of class, such as office hours. Links to an external site.
What Are Office Hours?
My student office hours are regular times each week when I am
- in my office and available to work with students.
- on Zoom and available to work with students.
Think of it as free tutoring, as well as a chance to chat about all things related to school, career goals, etc.
When and Where Are Office Hours?
This semester, my office hours are
- Tuesdays from 4-5pm in my office, Baker 1824
- Thursdays via Zoom from 6:30-7:30pm Links to an external site.
You don't need an appointment; just stop by! If you'd like to discuss something private, you can let me know ahead of time and I'll set aside some time for that. Otherwise, I'm happy to have groups come in together, to hear and learn from each other's questions.
Who Goes to Office Hours?
Successful students go to office hours! Over the years, I've found that successful students reach out as soon as they need help. When they get stuck on something, they don't move on until they get that sticky point clarified. Often, a seemingly small point can be the key to "unlocking" a much bigger concept. So it's best to ask questions sooner, rather than later.
It's a great habit to keep a piece of paper called "Questions for Abigail" in your binder at all times. When something comes up, jot it down. Then you can stop by my office hours as often as you like to get your questions answered.
Students use office hours to
-
- ask for help on study questions
- ask for help understanding quiz and exam questions, or understanding why they got questions right or wrong
- ask for help finding course or institutional resources (ex. how do I get a library book? where do I find the answer to this study question? what do I do if I missed lab this week? how can I get tutoring for biology?)
- ask about science careers they are interested in
- ask general questions they are curious about related to biology or science or careers
- work quietly on their own, unmuting/speaking up if questions come up that they'd like help with
- chat and say hi
- tell me about something they saw/read/heard related to class or science in general
- ask for advice in their academic or professional lives
- give me feedback about how to make the course better for them/how to help them more
- work quietly on their own, listening in when other students had questions
Assignment:
You must attend one office hour session for anyone of the courses you are taking this semester.
How Can I Earn These Homework Points?
Option A:
Come to my office hours and ask at least one question! Make sure to introduce yourself and let me know which section you're in. There's no need to submit anything on Canvas, but please make it clear when you visit that you're choosing this option for homework points, so I can record it right there on the spot.
Option B:
Attend the office hours of an instructor from a different course. You can ask the instructor to email me a note (azoger@santarosa.edu), or take a selfie of yourself with the instructor and submit it through Canvas
