Why we eat food

Remember that we eat food in order to extract the biomolecules, break them down into  monomers and absorb them into our bloodstream to deliver to our cells. Then we can either use 

  1. the molecules and materials we need to build and repair cells in our bodies
  2. the energy stored in those molecules in order to keep our cells running and functioning.

 

Digestive Enzymes

Enzymes help speed up chemical reactions in  living organisms. Digestive enzymes are a specific category that speed up the break down of the biomolecules into their monomers.  We must break down the large biomolecules into their monomers so that they are small enough to be absorbed across the wall of the small intestine into the blood stream.   Watch this video to learn more about them.
