You can't have sexual reproduction with out meiosis. There are several reasons for this, but let's start with the most obvious problem that meiosis solves. 

Sexual reproduction fuses the chromosomes from one parent with the chromosomes from another parent

This means that sexual reproduction doubles the amount of chromosomes. 

Something  has to reduce the  amount of chromosomes - and that is meiosis 

 

Let's look at this MADE UP example:  from your lab text:  you can see that after a few generations the offspring wouldn't even be able to move, they had so many chromosomes!

 1. Instead, meiosis saves us from that problem, by reducing the chromosome number in half.  Fill in this chart below (its in your lab textbook)
