ATHL2 - YOGA FOR ATHLETES (section 2306)

  • This class meets Tue/Thurs at 6:30-8pm in 905 Tauzer Gymnasium (Santa Rosa Campus).
  • This course is a 1.5 unit course.
  • This course runs from Aug 29 to Dec 16.
  • Our first class meeting will be August 30.
  • This class can be taken P/NP.
  • You will need to bring your own yoga mat.
  • You will also be asked to bring either a yoga blanket or a large towel. 
  • This is a partially online course in that tests may be taken online, and some discussions and assignments will be submitted online. Also, course lecture notes may be available online. 

Course Description

This class will introduce intercollegiate athletes to yoga techniques related to sport performance, injury prevention, and mental skills. Using Hatha yoga asanas (postures), students will emphasize sport-specific flexibility, strength, balance, and coordination. Yoga techniques for mind-body connection and centering will include breathing and relaxation methods.

  • Students should dress in athletic attire for class and be prepared to move and stretch.
  • Students must bring their own yoga mat and yoga blanket (or a large towel). 
  • Students may be asked to use the Canvas course web site for assignment instructions, submitting assignments or exams, and viewing grades.

Student Learning Outcomes 

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

1.  Demonstrate hatha yoga asanas and techniques.
2.  Create a beginning level yoga practice designed to improve sport-specific flexibility, muscular
    strength, balance, and coordination.
3.  Describe relaxation, breathing and centering yoga methods.

Student Objectives

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
1. Apply principles of movement and body awareness during hatha yoga postures.
2. Demonstrate beginning level hatha yoga asanas including floor, seated, kneeling, and
    standing postures.
3. Integrate proper breathing techniques during yoga asanas.
4. Design and perform personal practices based on sport-specific flexibility, muscular strength,
    balance, and coordination.
5. Apply yoga techniques and benefits into sport practices, competition, and daily life practices.
6. Repeating students must demonstrate an increased depth and breadth of related skills,
     with new learning objectives.

Pass-NoPass (P/NP)

You may take this class P/NP. Due to the pandemic, the P/NP deadline is extended to the last day of class. You must decide before the deadline, and add the option online in your portal or file the P/NP form with Admissions and Records. See deadline for P/NP under "Important Dates" above. With a grade of C or better, you will get P. Once you decide to go for P/NP, you cannot change back to a letter grade. If you are taking this course as part of a certificate program, you can probably still take the class P/NP. Check with a counselor to be sure.

I will post announcements on the “Instructor Announcements” page in Canvas throughout the semester. Canvas notifies students according to their preferred Notification Preferences as I create an Announcement. 

In order to check your notification settings; please click on ‘Account’ in the upper left hand corner when you are logged into canvas, then click on ‘notifications’.  If you are logged into canvas, the communication settings link should take you straight to the page.

I highly recommend that you update your user settings to make sure that you receive the following right away (Click the check mark – notify me right away) for:

  1. Announcement: this is how I will communicate with the entire class 
  2. Submission comment: this is how I will give you personal feedback on your assignments
  3. Conversation message: this is where I send students private messages through Canvas 

Feel free to change the settings on any others based on your personal preferences. 


Physical and Mental Health 

Should you experience any physical or mental health issues, know that all of us at SRJC care about your well-being. SRJC’s Student Health Services (SHS) has nurse practitioners and mental health therapists available. Confidential sessions are provided via secure Zoom or in-person. Sessions are free for SRJC students taking credit or non-credit classes, and some providers can converse with you in Spanish if you prefer. SHS also has on-site covid rapid testing and vaccinations available also at no cost. Options for Participation 

Since this is a movement-based class, regular attendance and participating in the yoga practices are critical for success in this course. Participation consists of attending class and participating in the entire class period. I will take roll at the start of class. If you arrive after roll call, it’s your responsibility to check in with me after class to receive credit. If you must leave early on a rare occasion, please tell me before class begins. 


Make-up Policy

You may make up FOUR absences per semester by submitting a recorded time lapse video of you doing a recorded practice. 


Attendance

It is strongly advised that if you need to miss more than one class/homework deadline in a row that you contact me to avoid being dropped from the class.


Course Evaluation

Yoga Practice Participation – 260 points: 10 points x 26 classes (60%)

Written Assignments - 50 points overall (12%)

Exams – 60 points (14%)

Skill Performance- 60 points (14%)

Total = 430

*Points are subject to change based on the number of assignments, discussions, and quizzes that are assigned. If any changes are made in the syllabus, or in grading, I will post an announcement. 


Grading Policy

Visit the “Grades” in Canvas to keep track of your grades.

If taking Pass/No Pass you need at least 70% of the total class points. 


Exams

There will be an online midterm and final exam. It is your responsibility to take the online exams by the due date.


Late Policy

All assignments are due by 11:55pm on the due date. Late submissions may be accepted at my discretion but will not receive full credit. If a student would like full credit for late work due to an unforeseen emergency, the student can provide me with written documentation. Please include your section number with any email or canvas message.  


Standards of Conduct

Students who register in SRJC classes are required to abide by the SRJC Student Conduct Standards. Violation of the Standards is basis for referral to the Vice President of Student Services or dismissal from class or from the College. See the Student Code of Conduct page.Links to an external site.
