How To Use TechZoom

Introduction

Zoom is an online video conferencing application that will enable you to meet with your instructor for appointments or special class presentations.  The application is already integrated here in Canvas and is a standard application used by teachers at this college.

I highly recommend that you download the Zoom application ahead of time to make participating in online appointments and special class presentations easier for you.  I've included links to the applications you will need below.  If you are not familiar with ConferZoom, use the links under "Tips" below to learn more about how to use this software.

I use ConferZoom to host office hours when an in-person meeting isn't possible.  To schedule an appointment, simply send me a message using the Canvas Inbox.  You can drop in during my regular office hours by clicking on ConferZoom on the course main menu.

Zoom Etiquette

You should think about attending a class or meeting with your teacher on Zoom in the same way as meeting in person.  The purpose of a Zoom meeting for class or office hours is the same, but done in place of a face-to-face presence for any number of good reasons.  Here are my expectations for all Zoom sessions.

  • Your microphone and speakers must be operational.  Use the camera and enable video.
  • Be aware of background noise.  Mute  your microphone except when talking.
  • Position the camera on your face and at least an arm's length away from the screen.  Always look directly at the camera rather than at yourself on the screen in order to provide the best eye contact with your instructor and fellow students.
  • Wear appropriate clothing just as you would attending class on campus.
  • Be conscious of the background and of what the camera is seeing around and behind you.  If you use a virtual background, select an appropriate and professional image.
  • Limit distractions and focus on the class meeting.  Silence your mobile device just as you would in a classroom.
  • Observe the same level of professional conduct as you would in a face to face meeting: Avoid interrupting others, keep comments civil and respectful. Avoid conflict. If the meeting brings up issues that are not germane to the meeting’s topic, arrange to have a separate discussion at a later time with the appropriate parties.
  • Student recording of any kind is prohibited unless permission is granted ahead of time by the instructor.  This includes audio, video, and screen captures of any kind.  This policy is no different than in a face-to-face classroom situation or live meeting.
