Lab Discussion: Metadata
- Due No Due Date
- Points 20
- Submitting a website url or a file upload
We are going to work with your Zoom In Zoom Out Nature Journal Assignment
Group Roles
- One person is time keeper- alert your group to time limits
- One person is reporter - will report back to the whole class the main points of your discussion. Specifically answers to the prompts below.
- One person is submitter- this person will submit the assignment to Canvas
- EVERYONE must contribute to formulating answers to the questions below.
- EVERYONE must contribute to recording the answers to the questions below in the Google Doc.
Directions: Zoom In Zoom Out and Metadata
-
- Each student:
- Display your nature journal entry
- Each student:
- 5 minutes each to explain your field site, and what metadata you chose to record.
- Each student:
The rest of your time will be spent on the following
-
- Group Metadata : using the questions and observations from the group members answer the following questions.
- Metadata List 1 : As a group, make a complete list of the type of characteristics that you could record as part of your metadata. ( 2 points)
- Metadata List 2: From this list, pull out the handful of information that you all agree you should ALWAYS include in your nature journal. This shouldn't be ALL of the items from your list. ( 3 points)
- Metadata Reasons: For Metadata List 2 (Must Include Metadata), explain why each one is so important.(5 points)
- As part of your explanation, include an example of what questions one could answer about observations because of that type of metadata.
- For example, you will probably have the date as a Must Include Metadata. Having this information could allow you to determine if an event is seasonal or year round.
- Metadata Extras: were there any pieces of metadata that you wish you had been able to collect? For example, the angle of the slope or the light intensity? (3 points)
- What type of instruments would you have needed?
- Do a little googling and see if such instruments exist and if so if there are inexpensive versions available. Are there any DIY instructions for creating something like this yourself?
- Metadata and your Discussion Questions : Examine your ''I wonder'' or your ''I notice ". (5 points)
- For the entire group, select one of these and propose an possible explanation , in other words a hypothesis.
- Metadata and Testing Ideas: How could you test this explanation/hypothesis? If your hypothesis is correct, what would you predict or expect to happen? What observations would you need to test to see if your predictions were correct? What metadata would you need? (5 points)
- Group Metadata : using the questions and observations from the group members answer the following questions.
Submission
One person in your group will submit the answers to the questions above. BUT everyone needs to have contributed to writing the answers. Since you will be using Google Docs, you can all participate at the same time. I will be checking to make sure that each of you participated in editing and writing the document.
Rubric

Keep in mind that 8 students have already been assessed using this rubric. Changing it will affect their evaluations.
