Here is your final Unit Assessment. Please give complete, thorough answers! This is your final push..
- Someone says to you that the climate isn't warming, and points to the really cold winters and large snowfalls in the East Coast as evidence. Using the information from this course, what is your explanation of why this is a misconception.? ( it should be no more than 4-5 sentences and have no harsh judgements or insults!) ( 10 points) : Week 13
- How have humans altered the carbon cycle? In order to answer this question, you need to first describe the basics of the carbon cycle, followed by indicating which parts are altered by humans and in what ways. ( 10 points) Week 13
- While talking to a friend or family member, they say to you ''Climate change doesn't sound like a problem. The planet has only warmed 1o Celscius and is on track to warm 2-4 o Celsius. That doesn't sound too bad'' . How would you explain the seriousness of these type of global temperature changes? You are limited to 4-5 sentences. This should be a general explanation. ( 10 points) Week 15
- . After you have explained the issue above, the person says '' But climate has warmed in the past, before there were humans. Therefore this can't be about human activity''. What would you say to explain that humans are the source of our current problems. Recording to help you with answering this question- from class.
You can also see the same interactive graphic in the assignment : 2018 National Climate Assessment - Indicators and Causes. Follow the instructions in the assignment.
( 20 points) Week 14. - Select 4 of the myths below, write a response that is grounded in the content covered in this module. (20 points total) Week 16
-
- Each response should be three to five sentences long
- Include evidence in support of your response.
Example Statement: Historical fires were understory fires.
Example Response: Many historical fires were understory fires in ecosystems like montane forests, Northcoast forests and oak woodlands. However, some historic fires were stand-replacing. For example, the Great 1910 Fire in the Rocky Mountains was a stand replacing event; the fire climbed into the crown of the trees within the montane forest because of strong winds. Also, in some ecosystems, like chaparral, fires are stand-replacing, moving through the dense shrubs and killing most or all above-ground vegetation.
Statements to Evaluate: Select 4 of these statements
Statement #1. All wildfires are bad and should be stopped immediately
Statement #2. Wildfires are natural and should be allowed to burn freely
Statement #3. Fires are the result of forest mismanagement
Statement #4. Logging forests prevents wildfires
Statement #5. Mechanical thinning for fuels reduction is harmful to forest health.
Statement #6. The fires are caused by climate change
Statement #7. We can stop fire along the WUI by better fuels management
Statement #8. Defensible space around a home will save it from a wildfire.
6. A friend or family member says to you '' I don't want to talk about climate change. It's too depressing, frightening and makes me anxious.'' What is your response to them? Incorporate what you have learned in this module as well as what skills you use in your personal relationships. ( 10 points) Week 15
