Answer Key - Assignment 2 Latitude and Longitude
Name the city, mountain, island or other distinctive place found at each of the listed positions. You will be using the "Maps of the World" (Links to an external site.) online map to locate in what country the location is and then you will be using the appropriate, detailed "CIA Map" (Links to an external site.) to find the very specific latitude and longitude. When you use the CIA maps, select the Physiography Maps - they contain latitude and longitude. This is tedious but not difficult.
[To help you through the process, view this video (Links to an external site.) of me finding what is located at 45°S, 72°W using the assigned maps.]
- 9°N, 42° E (Harar, Ethiopia)
- 13°S, 72°W (Cusco, Peru)
- 24°S, 46°E. (Tsivory, Madagascar)
Find the geographical coordinates for the following locations using the appropriate CIA Map (Links to an external site.) (do not use minutes or seconds or decimals!)

I accept an answer that is within 2° of what is shown below. Your answer was marked incorrect if you used minutes, seconds or decimals.
4. Port Maria, Jamaica (use CIA Jamaica Map) (18°N, 77°W)
5. Stanley, Falkland Islands (use CIA Argentina map) (52°S, 58°W)
6. Moundou, Chad (use CIA Central African Republic map). (8°N, 16°E)
7. (no map required) The Length of the Equator is 24, 901 miles. Since the Equator pass through 360° of longitude, each degree of longitude at the Equator is approximately how many miles?
24,902 miles ÷ 360° of longitude = 69 miles per degree
There are 69 miles between degrees of Longitude only at the Equator. This distance becomes less and less as you move toward the poles. For latitude, however, there are always about 69 miles between degrees of latitude.
The Surface of the Earth is about 70% ocean, 30% land. Now consider the four quadrants of the Earth: NW, NE, SW and SE. Take a look at the World Map (Links to an external site.)
