While you are encouraged to dedicate yourself to mastering our material, don't expect that to be achieved in one week. Challenge yourself and master the material as well as you can. For the purpose of our class, you will be expected to become familiar with the names, terms, and themes identified in our quizzes. At a minimum, master that! After one week, you may not yet have mastered this week's conception of the Good Life. But you should be able to say something about it. 1) In Confessions, Augustine claims that "there is an appeal to the eye in beautiful things, in gold and silver and all such; the sense of touch has its own powerful pleasures; and the other senses find qualities in things suited to them." In this famous passage, Augustine seems to be describing how our immoderate inclinations manifest through our bodily senses. For Augustine, the source of this problem is our Fallenness from God. But one can accept this account of immoderate inclinations without accepting Augustine's account of the source of the problem. Without referring to Fallenness and God, what is an example of powerful pleasures?
