Meet the Instructor
Bio
My name is Emily Peng. You could call me Peng Laoshi or Emily. I’ll be your instructor this semester. I’ve been teaching Chinese for over 20 years. I’ve always loved learning languages and sharing this passion of learning with people. I am passionate about teaching and have a great deal of experience teaching Mandarin Chinese in the US.
This is an online course, and we will be using Canvas as our learning management system. However, we will meet via Zoom twice a week as listed on course descriptions. This course is an introduction to elementary traditional Mandarin Chinese grammar and development of all language skills such as speaking, listening, reading and writing. I provide a lot of materials on Canvas, and it will help you to get acquainted and succeed in this course. I look forward to seeing you in class.

How you can contact me
- E-mail: You could contact me through the Canvas inbox and expect a reply within 24 hours during the week (M-F).
- Q&A Discussion: You could ask course related content questions.
- Office hours via Zoom: 30 minutes prior to Zoom meeting twice a week before group meetings.
- Appointment: You could email me to schedule an online appointment (M-F 10am-12pm)
How I will contact you
- Announcement:
I may use Canvas Announcements for urgent and important messages, so it’s strongly suggested that you set your Canvas notification preferences for Announcement to “Notify me right away.” See these Canvas help resources:
- E-mail: I will be sending any messages via the Canvas inbox. If you contact me through the Canvas inbox and should expect a reply within 24 hours during the week (M-F). If you don't hear back from me in 24 hours, assume I did not receive your email and resend it.
- Discussion: There are General discussion (in English) and Course learning discussion (in Chinese), and I will be participating in the both discussions weekly as well.
- Zoom session (group meetings): I will have a weekly Zoom meeting twice a week as the course schedule for students to connect over difficulties with the content.
- Feedback: I will be providing feedback on assignments and projects in the grade book. Also, I will be sending messages via the Canvas Inbox.
