What is Animation?

“Animation offers a medium of story telling and visual entertainment which can bring pleasure and information to people of all ages everywhere in the world.”

Animation is the process of displaying still images in a rapid sequence to create the illusion of movement. These images can be hand drawn, computer generated, or pictures of 3D objects. Though most people associate animation with cartoons, it also has applications in industrial and scientific research.

Careers in animation

Animators create animation and visual effects for films, video games, television, mobile devices, and other forms of media using illustrations and software programs. Animators also create graphics and develop storyboards, drawings and illustrations. They create, plan, and script animated narrative sequences, and assist with background design and production coordination. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) combines multimedia artists and animators into one career group. According to the Bureau, “multimedia artists and animators often work in a specific medium. Some focus on creating animated movies or video games. Others create visual effects for movies and television shows. Animators work in the motion picture and video industry, computer design and video gaming field, specializing in advertising, public relations campaigns, and much more. According to the BLS, The median annual wage for multimedia artists and animators was $63,630 in May 2014. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $34,860, and the top 10 percent earned more than $113,470. The Bureau also mentions that more than half of animators were self-employed in 2014!
