Advice To Future Economics and Business Econ Majors at UCSB - Eric Herrera - (SRJC graduate now at UCSB)

Hello Mr. Wegman,

I took Micro economics with you my last semester at the JC (Spring 2016). I transferred to UCSB Fall 2016, and I finished my first quarter December 7^th. I want to wish you happy holidays, and share information with you about my transfer experience at UCSB. That way, you can share it with students who are interested in Economics or Accounting.

To begin, both majors, Economics and Economics & Accounting, are well known and respected by many students because they are incredibly intense. Transfer and international students are not automatically in the majors when they are accepted to the campus, and they must take a filter course known as Econ. 10A (intermediate Micro Economics). If they can get a B in this course, and only then, are they accepted into the major (a B- or less is unsatisfactory). The problem is getting a B is easier said than done, as many students quickly realized during my first quarter. Approximately 80% of the students who tried, received a grade lower than a B!

The class is extremely difficult, but it must be passed in order for students to be accepted into the major. Please tell your students who are pursuing a career in economics or accounting to take their economics class extremely serious because if they learn the material well, they will be more likely to be in the top 20 perctile of successful students who passed. Obviously those who are pursuing a career in accounting should do their best in accounting because it’s only going to get harder from here-on-out. Also, tell them that taking the math business courses will not help them very much for classes like Econ. 10A. I noticed that most transfer students from community colleges from all over the state who took calculus business courses did very poorly in this subject because they didn’t have the deep understanding of math this course requires. Personally, I took Math 1A and 1B, which is required for people who want to apply to Berkeley, and I don’t regret it at all because thanks to those classes, I was able to understand the Economics concepts with ease, and I ended up teaching other students how to interpret the math with the economic concepts we were taught.
