III.  Essay (65 points)  You will answer one of the following essay questions:

 

1.  Describe the effects that the Industrial Revolution had on women in the United States from Lowell through the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire.  Be sure to address:  the effect industrialization had on working class and middle class women, each groups’ living and working conditions, and what attempts were made to improve the lives of the working class at the time.

 

2.  Describe how the idea of women voting progressed through the 19th and 20th centuries.   Be sure to discuss:  Seneca Falls, the debate over the 15th Amendment, and the events connected to the suffrage movement. 

 

3.  Describe the lives of women in the West in the late 19th century.  Be sure to describe the lives of women Homesteaders, Native American and Chinese women.  Was the West an egalitarian place for women at this time?

 

 

I will choose which essay you will write on, therefore you need to prepare for all of the questions.   You need to cite from at least 3 of the sources that have been assigned or presented during class.   These sources include any readings, images, and /or videos that we have seen/discussed in class.  This essay will be due on Canvas by  November 7th at midnight.  The link will be open from Sunday the 5th at noon until the 7th.  Once you open the link, you will have 90 minutes to answer the question.
