Coates Reading Assignment—pp 14-64

Reading Assignment for Between the World and Me: pp 14-64.

Before you begin reading:

  1. Watch Professor Terry Mulcaire's lecture on the book--"Bad Dream" (Please note this talk does not have captions, but the other talk on that page "Ta-Nehisi Coates and the Politics of Post-Civil Rights Radicalism" is captioned.  Go with that if you prefer captions.)  Either of these lectures will count as research sources for the Coates Essay.
  2. Take a look at the discussion prompt for this section of the book.
  3. Get reading.  Begin to consciously use the Active Reading Strategies. Reading is a personal process, so experiment with different strategies and find out what works for you.  The most important thing is that you annotate/take notes as you read.  Force yourself to stop periodically and track your thinking about what you've read.
  4. Keep the essay topics in mind.  Your objective should be to begin determining which themes or lessons you might want to write about in your essay. Keep that in mind as you read, and annotate and take notes accordingly.
