Starting Coates—Preview and Introduction

Complete the following reading before you participate in the "Difficulties" discussion.

  1. "Preview Between the World and Me by reading Michelle Alexander's review of the book Links to an external site. (Alexander's praise and criticism will give you a sense of what the book is about), watch either (or both) of the interviews with Coates posted on SRJC's library guide for Between the World and Me (which will be useful as you begin thinking about research sources for the Coates Essay.
  2. Review the Coates Essay prompt and take note of the themes and lessons you'll want to be looking out for as you read. 
  3. Then read the first section of Between the World and Me (pp 5-12), annotate the text, and take notes as you read.  Try to mark places that are relevant to the themes and/or lessons noted in the essay prompt as you read.  Try to consciously use the active reading strategies.
