Essay 4: Analysis of a Song

Essay #4: But it’s a really important song!

Overview

Popular music, particularly rock and roll, hip hop, and rap, have traditionally been controversial and often criticize and contradict the values of the dominant culture.  Since the late 1940s, both critics and parents alike have criticized music performed and purchased by young people.  Performers and buyers of this music claim it speaks to them in a language they can understand about real issues they experience, and that it answers the questions that trouble them.

Specifics

Select one “controversial” song of any genre that particularly appeals to you.  Consider why you like the song: Is it the political message?  Is it the content of the lyrics?  Is there an important cultural association?  Write a short, 3-4 page persuasive paper where you analyze the song, explain the potential controversy around it, and convince the reader of the song’s value as a work of art and of its larger value beyond simply being background music at a party.

How to select a song:

  • Controversial is a subjective term —as long as someone could be offended by the content, it counts as controversial
  • Look into music not just currently in the Top 40—music from the 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s is rich with cultural meaning
  • Selecting a song takes time—put effort into this early to help yourself out in the long run

Criteria for Success

  • The Essay has an arguable thesis (arguing for the value of the song)
  • The essay give appropriate background and context for the song
  • The essay does a thorough analysis of the song
  • The essay successfully explains why the song is important and valuable
  • The argument includes clearly explained reasoning and a well-developed counter-argument
  • Each paragraph is focused and well-developed according to the P.I.E. format learning in class.
