This is a tentative schedule and is subject to change, but I will not change the due dates for major assignments without first consulting with the class.  “Homework due” means homework that is due that day, not homework for that night.

Homework due: Take a second try at writing your group's assigned paragraph for the essay about Paikea.  You must TYPE this assignment and bring it to class.

Homework due: Bring Ten Steps to class.  Work on your essays and visit the Writing Center for extra help.  Read about Proposition 64 here Links to an external site. Links to an external site..  Write a typed, 150-word explanation of your opinion about this proposition.  Do you think it's a good idea?  Why or why not?

Voter Guide Project, Research Skills and Assignments

Homework due: Final Draft of Whale Rider Essay due (submit both a hard copy in class, and an electronic version on Canvas).  Finish "Vocabulary in Context" in Ten Steps, through page 40 (Review Test 3).

Voter Guide Project, Main Ideas, Summary

Homework due: Find two sources that you think will work for your Informative Research assignment.  Print them and use active reading strategies to annotate and outline them.  Then write a 150-word summary of each article.  Bring the articles and the summaries to class (typed).

Homework due: Attend your conference on time (the conference schedule is on Canvas), and bring the final draft of your informative research assignment.  Be sure to post this to the class Voter Guide Links to an external site. on Canvas too.  Finish "Main Ideas" in Ten Steps, through page 80.

Analysis of Informative Research

Homework due: Read your group's Informative Research on our Voter Guide Links to an external site..  Write up response to the research explaining what further research you think the group needs to complete to be able to write the Final Conclusion.  What facts, arguments, or events do you think you need to understand to be able to make a decision about the proposition?  What did you read in the Informative Research that led you to these ideas?  This response should be close to a page long and typed.

Finish Ten Steps "Supporting Details" through p 128.

Homework due: Draft of "In-Depth" Research.  Bring in full-length, typed drafts of your summaries for the "In-Depth Research" assignment.

Week 9

Homework due: Final draft of In-Depth Research.  Bring hard copies of your summaries to class, and also post them to the class Voter Guide.

Complete Ten Steps chapter "Implied Meaning" through p 168.

Homework due:  Prepare for a Mastery Test on Implied Main Ideas.  Come to class prepared to give your Voter Guide Presentation.  If you want to revise the Whale Rider Essay, turn it in today along with the original. Highlight the changes you have made.

Week 12

Coates

Homework due: Prepare for a Mastery Test on Relationships I. Read and take notes on Michelle Alexander's review of Links to an external site.Between the World and Me Links to an external site..  Read and annotate p 5-12 of Coates.  Reading Response: What did you learn about Coates' book from Alexander's review?  What expectations do you have about the book after reading her review?  Make note of the places that gave you an idea of what to expect from the book.  Also, find 2 places in these first few pages that were difficult to understand or unclear to you.  Or maybe you just felt like you disagreed with them.  Identify the passages, and explain why they were difficult.  This assignment should be 2 healthy paragraphs long and it can be hand-written.

Homework due: Read Coates pp 14-39.  Identify two quotes related to the themes we are tracking for the essay, and put them into our Quote Bank Links to an external site..  Type them in and put the page number and your name in parenthesis.  

Reading Response (hand-written and about 1 page long): Write brief responses to all of the following questions--reference page numbers and passages that helped you develop your answers: (1) How does fear impact the behavior of the people in Coates' community--both in his home and on the streets?  (2) What is Coates' criticism of the school system?  How are the schools related to the violence on the streets? (3) Track Coates' thoughts on investigation and writing--how did those things help him through his youth?  (4) How did the thinking of Malcolm X influence Coates?  What lessons did Coates learn from Malcolm?  (5) What lessons did Coates learn during his youth?  What conclusions did his experiences lead him to? 

Week 13

Coates and Analysis Practice/Library Orientation

Homework due: Read and annotate Coates pp 39-64.  Identify two quotes related to the themes we are tracking for the essay, and put them into our Quote Bank Links to an external site..  Type them in and put the page number and your name in parenthesis.  

Reading Response: What kinds of lessons did Coates learn at Howard University (the Mecca)?  Keep track of lessons that he learns about his quest to find a clear history of black people, about sexuality, about love, about the diversity of black identity, etc.  His time at college was important in terms of opening up to different understandings of himself and the world around him.  Try to look out for sections where he learns something, realizes something, or changes his mind about something.  Provide quoted evidence to back up your response and explain your thoughts clearly.  This should be about 1 page long, hand-written.

Homework due: Read and annotate Coates pp 64-99.  Identify two quotes related to the themes we are tracking for the essay, and put them into our Quote Bank Links to an external site..  Type them in and put the page number and your name in parenthesis.  Prepare for a Mastery Test on Relationships II.

Reading Response: Brainstorm ideas for the Coates Essay, and bring a hand-written, full-page explanation of your ideas--What theme or lesson will your essay focus on?  What type of analysis do you want to do (comparison, analysis of causes, etc)?  What type of research would be appropriate for your topic?  Spend some time on this brainstorming, and really think through your ideas.  Point to specific sections of the book that are important for your topic.

Week 14

Reading Response: I forgot to update this response, so nothing is due in terms of a reading response for today.  

Complete Ten Steps Chapter "Inferences" pp 273-306.

Homework due: Read and annotate Coates pp 114-132.  Identify two quotes related to the themes we are tracking for the essay, and put them into our Quote Bank Links to an external site..  Type them in and put the page number and your name in parenthesis.  Prepare for a Mastery Test on Inferences.

Reading Response: In this section, Coates explains that because he was a boy from a "captive class" he had problems with his eyes--meaning (I think) that he couldn't see the possibilities of life.  What do you think Coates means by this?  Why was his wife different?  Why could she "see" more?  How did going to Paris change Coates in terms of what he could "see"?  As always, provide evidence to support your answer from the text.  Submit this to moodle.

Reading Response:  Now that you've finished the book, return to Alexander's review Links to an external site. that we read when we first started the book.  Although she likes a lot of things about Coates' book, at one point in her review she says that it's too negative.  She says, "I tend to think we must not ask whether it is possible for a human being or society to become just or moral; we must believe it is possible."  Do you think Coates' makes change seem impossible or unlikely?  Do you see hope in the book?  If so, where?  If not, what do you think of Coates' rather somber view of race relations in our country?

Homework due: Be able to access your draft of the Coates Essay in class on the lab computers.  Complete Ten Steps Chapter "Argument" pp 363-386.  Select the song that you want to use for the final essay and be able to access it in class.

Homework due: Final Draft of Coates Essay due--submit it to Canvas.  Prepare for a Mastery Test on Argument.  Bring the outline on the Final Essay that you worked on during the last class, and be prepared to work on that essay in class.

Homework due: Be able to access a rough draft of your Final Essay on the computers--this rough draft should be full-length and typed.  Complete Ten Steps Chapter "Critical Reading" pp 363-386.
