Strategies for the Introduction Paragraph or Section

In this section, you'll read about the major types of introduction strategies used in academic writing.  You'll be familiar with some of them, but I think some will be new to you.  The purpose here is to enhance your understanding of the purpose of the introduction paragraph/section of your essay, and to give you some specific strategies that will be useful in terms of setting up your main argument.

There is a quiz to test your knowledge at identifying the strategy that an author is using.  I also provided some videos that review the characteristics of strong and weak introductions that previous students have turned in.
